August is a busy month for awareness campaigns, with several national and international observances focused on a variety of topics, including health, safety, social causes, and more. 

August 1, 2024 we open, so we celebrate all August long.


Here are some of the key areas of awareness and celebrations that August is known for:

Health & Wellness:

  • National Wellness Month: This observance focuses on promoting well-being in all aspects of life, including career, financial, physical, community, and social.

  • National Immunization Awareness Month: This month highlights the importance of routine vaccination for people of all ages.

  • National Breastfeeding Month: This month promotes the benefits and support needed for breastfeeding mothers and babies.

  • Children's Eye Health and Safety Month: This observance raises awareness about the importance of protecting children's vision and eye health.

  • Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness Month: Dedicated to raising awareness about this rare genetic disorder.

  • Psoriasis Action Month: This month aims to educate the public about psoriasis and support those affected by it.

  • MedicAlert Awareness Month: Focuses on the importance of medical identification and emergency information.

  • National Hair Loss Awareness Month: Dedicated to raising awareness about hair loss and its causes. 

  • Social & Cultural:

    • Black Business Month: Celebrates and supports Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs, raising awareness about their contributions to the economy and the challenges they face.

    • International Youth Day: Focuses on issues and opportunities facing young people globally.

    • International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples: Recognizes and promotes the rights and cultures of indigenous populations worldwide.

    • International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition: Commemorates the victims of the transatlantic slave trade and promotes reflection on its causes and consequences.

    • International Humanitarian Day: Celebrates the work of humanitarian aid workers and highlights the importance of international cooperation in responding to crises.

    • International Day Against Nuclear Tests: Advocates for the elimination of nuclear weapons testing.

    • International Lefthanders Day: Acknowledges and celebrates the uniqueness of left-handed individuals. 

    Safety & Emergency Preparedness:

    • International Overdose Awareness Day: Aims to end overdose deaths, raise awareness about substance abuse, and reduce the stigma associated with drug-related deaths.

    • Back to School Safety Month: Emphasizes safety for students, parents, and drivers during the back-to-school season. 

    Other:

    • National Make-a-Will Month: Encourages individuals to create wills and plan for the future.

    • National Civility Month: Promotes courteous and respectful behavior in all aspects of life.

    • National Dog Month: Celebrates dogs and encourages responsible pet ownership.

    • World Breastfeeding Week: Observed during the first week of August, this week highlights the importance of breastfeeding and its benefits.

    • International Clown Week: Celebrated in the first week of August, this week appreciates the art of clowning.

    • National Health Center Week: Celebrates and supports the work of community health centers.

    • National Grief Awareness Day: Acknowledges and supports those grieving the loss of loved ones. 


  • More about August: Virgo Birthstones:

    • Peridot:

      Known as the "gem of the sun," it's believed to have healing powers and has been found in volcanic lava and meteorites

    • Spinel:

      Once mistaken for rubies, spinel is now recognized for its own beauty and variety of colors. 

    • Sardonyx:

      The original August birthstone, dating back over 4,000 years, is a type of chalcedony with alternating layers of sard and onyx.
